Nicholas PAVLICEVIC (and variants)
« on: Saturday 11 September 21 06:42 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone I am trying to unravel the origins of the above who came to NSW (Sofala) as a miner from Dubrovnik in 1870.  This information comes from a book which is out of print now I believe, called Croatians in Australia Pioneers, Settlers and their descendants by Ilija Sutalo page 252

Nicholas married Mary Jane DEVLIN in 1878 in Sofala NSW.  PARLICEVICH was the way his surname is spelt on the BDM.  He died in 1906 in Sunny Corner aged 69, I do not have his death certificate as yet.

6 Children born to this couple FRANCESA PARLICEVICH 1879,  VINGENZA PARLICEVICH 1880, FLORIO Patrick J 1882, STEPHEN 1883 as PAVLICIVICH, TONINA 1885 all Sofala and NEENA A. L PAOLICEVIC Sunny corner.  Terrible name to research.

I was just informed this morning that the wife of Nicholas was charged with murdering her child in 1871 sentence to death BUT must have been aquitted at some stage!!  I cannot find any record of her Mary Jane Devlin being in Darlnghurst Gaol, perhaps she was in another??

Anyway hope someone can give me a clue or two as to how to find Nicholas on any immigration/shipping records OR Mary Jane DEVLIN'S time in Gaol.  Thanks very much kind regards Dianna

Hi thanks for that.  She must have been set free about 1878 to marry Pavlicevic I would say.  Regards Dianna

Mary was released in 1877. It's on Trove, article published Government Gazette, 11 July 1877.

A copy of their marriage certificate should give you some information on his parentage.
A copy of his death certificate may give you some information about how long he'd been in Australia (depending on how well the information knew him).

The name Pavlicevich is in a few records at Trove - the earliest being someone by the name in 1873 (surname only) for gold mining, and then Nicholas in 1876

Hi jorose.  I am going to track down his marriage hopefully in the Bathurst Archives office as they may have any missing information on the BDM one.  I'm waiting for my cousin to send the one from the BDM (I think! LOL) also Nicholas death certificate which will only be as good as the knowledge of the informant.  Yes he was involved in mining in the Sofala area for a while I think.

Still gathering relevant information hopefully will be able to get back to Croatia one day for any documents.  Regards Dianna

Hi,
Not much use in regard to Nicholas PAVLICEVIC, but given what she said about herself being 21 and a native born Australian, this may be the birth of Mary Jane DEVLIN. Not definite of course.
Others to this couple seem to be born round Sofala

DEVLIN Mary J
1053/1852 V18521053 69
Father Patrick
Mother Catherine

Hi Sue yes I would say you are correct with that.  From what I've seen Mary' mum remarried at some stage to a Michael LAWSON I think. Mary remarried also to a SLICK and she died with that name, I think the parents were wrong on the BDM but that doesn't surprise me.

The Pavlicevichs are painful to research but I think I have collated everything with every crazy variant of the name.  Keeps me busy. LOL Thanks so much for your reply.  Dianna
