Apples
« on: Monday 13 September 21 17:43 BST (UK) »
Often said when a family member does something similar to what one of his/her forebears did that
'the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.'

More often said about unsavoury traits ????

Is this true - are certain characteristics inherited ??

I think most people would agree that you inherit characteristics from both parents.  Maybe some of those are more obvious than others.

I feel that I inherited my father's orderly and practical nature as I am an organised person.  I usually know where to find something without having to turn the house upside down.

Sounds like "Nature and Nurture" again and, of course, how we define characteristics.

Neat, orderly parents will instil this in their children. Likewise, the children of parents who have contempt for the law of the land will learn by example.

But I don't think that either of these is the product of genetics.

Not sure how much we inherit and how much we absorb by living in close contact with people.
Little things come to mind, Mum was a stickler for straight lines ,in situations like step stoning the steps and flagstones, she did not come out with a ruler exactly but could tell if the edges were not straight!
In the days before wrapped sliced bread ,I had to take a clean tea towel to wrap a loaf in.
Not much wrapping in those wartime and post war days of austerity.
All pies were covered in grease proof paper ,which was folded and crimped to stop flies getting to them.
No fridge just a pantry .
I was the same until a fridge arrived and I can’t abide flies.
Well who can!
Mum told many hilarious stories ,inevitable in a large family.
One sister in particular played many practical jokes .
My daughter  can judge people in a few minutes, she either dislikes straight away or likes straight away.
Her Dad was the same, neither can/ could be false .
They were / are always correct.
I don’t know  how they did / do it!

Whether by example ,although in many business matters my OH would not have spoken about those things to the children.
However, all three have the same high principles as he had.
In the genes, or in smaller examples that still rub off ?
I pleat things, like the edge of my pinny and run my nails along the hem.
Can see Mum doing the same.
