I have something similar with one of my lines in Midlothian, Scotland. … I didn't even manage to put a registration number to his name due to the name being very common at that time.
Thanks for the info. Rena. If you’re still looking for your chap and haven’t seen this site before it might be of help https://sites.google.com/site/greenwichadmiraltyinpensioner/home, and this page specifically deals with tracking down out-pensioners https://sites.google.com/site/greenwichadmiraltyinpensioner/out-pensioner-research---a-case-study The admiralty records referred to are here https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/royal-navy-ratings-pensions/

Thank you - I appreciate the websites, which I've now visited.  The last one in your list needs another visit, to reduce the one thousand plus "hits" resulting from the name search lol.

There is a James Butcher on this list of pensioner applications from 1826. It might be worth some more exploration.

Thank you so much for pointing me back at these Neale. I’d already looked at them once but pulling them up again on FindMyPast after your nudge I noticed I’d made a rookie mistake and only looked at the transcripts not the original docs for the ADM 73 records. So I had another gander, and there he was. Just tidying up some loose ends before I’m happy with the proof, but hopefully I do now have ‘my’ James Butcher. Very much appreciated that you took the time to reply to this, cheers!
