Thanks to Antony above, I have had a review of my documents and sure enough, it looks like the name is J'Ony.  Look at the L in London and the J in John.  Its so obvious, I don't know how I've missed it!

List of the Livery of London, with their places of abode, and businesses under the heads of their respected companies, 1775

Goldsmiths
__Ony John, Mark Lane, tallow chandler

The image is of an open book but the fold in the book has obscured the initial letter/s. However, it follows what would appear to be "(J)efferies, Samuel, Hampton, Midx".
S. Wales, Somerset, Devon - Oxenham

Aberavon - Hopkin/s, Jenkins, Thomas
St. Brides/Wick - Jenkins
Llanblethian - Price
Abergwynfi - Han(d)ford
Pontardawe - Lewis.

Just noticed I hadn't posted these two 1776 "sightings" under liverymen of the City of London -

St. Dunstan's Hill District
Mark lane
I'Ony John, goldsmith, tallow chandler

Iony Jn, Mark Lane, tallow chandler, goldsmiths

Might be worth checking with the Goldsmiths' Guild?

S. Wales, Somerset, Devon - Oxenham

Aberavon - Hopkin/s, Jenkins, Thomas
St. Brides/Wick - Jenkins
Llanblethian - Price
Abergwynfi - Han(d)ford
Pontardawe - Lewis.

Thanks again.  There are a couple of unresolved issues that I have with this family group if you are interested in trying to solve.

So John J'Ony married Susanna Gilder in 1764.

They have a daughter Susanna, Baptised July 1766. So I suppose that the 1766 burial that you referred to could be either mother or daughter.

But there is a Susanna J'Ony who married George Hassan in 1777.  She was a minor and her father was John J'Ony.   See the extract I posted earlier today. (A Later burial in 1812 says she was born in 1858 so she couldn't have been the 1766 Susanna unless she was Baptised late.  But then she wouldn't have been the daughter of John and Susanna.

There are 2 other J'Ony marriages where the father is called John.  John (junior) and Mary Rolls 1778 and Martha J'Ony and John Hollamby in 1771.  So it seems like there are 2 families but I can't seem to work it out!
