Help with Derry street names?
« on: Wednesday 15 September 21 16:28 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if anyone could help me regarding some street names in Derry.

I've been researching my dad's tree and looking at the records between 1869 and 1901 one family lived at the following places.

21 Hoggs Folly, The Wells and 122 St Columbs Wells.

I guess The Wells and St Columbs Wells are names for the same street/place?

I have been told that Hoggs Folly was also called St. Columba's Walk.

Were St Columbs Wells  and St. Columba's Walk close to each other? I was trying to find an old map that might show these streets but alas no luck.

Mab,

I’m not native to the North-West but here goes  :-\

According to the PRONI Historical Maps Viewer https://apps.spatialni.gov.uk/PRONIApplication/, in the present day they’re about 400 metres apart. (Choose 5th Edition 1919-1963 map). The street St Columb’s Wells was much more extensive in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Have a look at this OpenStreetMap-
https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/5153322#map=17/54.99358/-7.32655

The road coming off Lecky Road (bottom left) and running to Barrack Street is St Columba’s Walk. What remains of St Columb’s (St Columba's on map) Wells (top centre) has been redeveloped.
