Mumtazuddin AHMAD & Dorothy Rose HOWELL
« on: Wednesday 15 September 21 16:56 BST (UK) »
The above were married in 1922 and lived in Woking. 1929 passenger lists leaving the UK shows Dorothy and a 2 and a quarter year old infant Lilla? leaving the UK for India (Calcutta) Mumtazuddin was a surgeon so up to 1959 I have found various addresses in India and Pakistan.
I cannot find the infant's birth, presumably here in the UK and can find no trace of the family in India or Pakistan. Can anyone suggest any sources I might try please?

Dorothy and a 1½ year old infant (Liela?) arrived in England from India in May 1928.
In view of this, is it possible that the child was indeed born in India?

I hadn’t found an arrival before 1929 so it is possible. I have UK addresses for them up to 1925 and I have just found a 1927 Medical register address in Calcutta so that looks promising. Where did you find the arrival please?

The 1928 list I referred to can be seen on Ancestry.

There is also, on FindMyPast, a 1926 list with a Dr & Mrs Ahmad plus a nine year old daughter, Leila, leaving Liverpool for Calcutta.

Their address is given as The Mosque, Oriental Road, Woking. A fascinating place https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shah_Jahan_Mosque,_Woking

Yes that would be correct as her sister married at the Mosque in 1939. Thanks for your help.

It doesn't add much, but there is a 1935 shipping record on Ancestry where the daughter is indexed as Rice Leila Ahmad - a mistranscription of "Miss".

Something odd here - a Leila who is aged 9 in 1926 and a Leila who is aged 18 months in 1928. Were there two Leilas?

It was quite common in certain places to name a child after one that had died previously
