Dutch Names
« on: Thursday 16 September 21 09:00 BST (UK) »
I have this person in my family tree. I believe it is Dutch. Am I correct in thinking the first 3 words are his names while the last  til Aagaard is his surname. The date for this person is abt 1378. I can go back further, so is there anything I should be aware of when it comes to Dutch ancestry. I have found Geni to be extremely helpful.

Peder Nielsen Gyldenstjerne til Aagaard

I would guess Scandinavian?

Aagard, Peder and Nielsen aren't Dutch, as far as I know.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aagaard
suggests either Danish or Norwegian.

His father which is
Gert Minckwitz Ulfstand, Glimminge says he is Dutch so I though his son would also be Dutch.

In Danish til = to/at, and there is a place called Ågård/Aagaard north of Kolding, DK, so I take him to be Peder Nielsen Gyldenstjerne at Aagaard.

Added: I see KGarrad's wiki link shows the Gyledenstjerne family is connected to Aagaard.

Gert Minckwitz Ulfstand, of Glimminge (Sweden) was born in Denmark according to Geni.com.

Can't see a link to Peder Nielsen Gyldenstjerne?

I remembered something while I was out ;D

In the France-annexed Netherlands, by Napoleon's decree of 18 August 1811 (No. 7178), all citizens who at the time had no surname were obliged to take one.

Consequently, many Dutch surnames can only be traced as far back as 1811.
