Word Comparison
« on: Friday 17 September 21 18:36 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, hope you're all keeping well.

I have a section of a Birth record and a section of a Marriage record and I looking to compare the surname of 'Jane'. One looks like a McKerr and the other looks like a McCann. I am trying to find a mother for 'Patt' and a wife for 'Edward' and these two snips are the closest I can get (Irish, no census).

Would anyone else risk assuming they are the same family, and the person who wrote one of them heard wrong? Or is there some out of the box thinking that I haven't thought of yet?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi,

If, in the marriage snippet, Anne's surname is McKerr, then Jane's is not McKann. The "K" is too different, methinks. I think it looks more like McLeann. But let's see what the others think.  :)

Best regards,
Karen

Edit: Sorry! You wrote McCann, not McKann.
But I still think it looks more like McLeann.  8)

1   Jane M'Kerr
2 Jane M'Leann The witnesses are M'Kerrs  and I wonder if these were her parents? perhaps her name was Jane Mclean M'Kerr and perhaps her mother's maiden surname was McLean.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies, I did notice the witness and think it was a coincidence that it looked like a McKerr - which confusion a little!

The only thing I could think of is the Jane was twice married (maiden McKerr > McCann/McLeann).

If her first husband suffered an early death, would it have been normal in 1850 Ireland/Northern Ireland to remarry?

Where is the McCann coming from?

The witnesses names will be important and I do not think they will be coincidental.

Hi shanreagh,

That was what the transcript interpreted it as, so I went with that

Could they both be Mckern? (Although I don’t see a “c”.)

It's possible, as this is the first and only evidence I have for the maiden name I couldn't rule it out
