Hi
I have a problem, I am researching a Caroline Mary Culpitt who was buried at Llandyfeisant Church in 1952 age 92.
I am in touch with the family associated with Caroline Mary and they have given me some details. When Grt Aunty Matilda died in 1994, the family found a note that had Caroline's details on it saying she was an orphan. That information was passed on by Hon David Rice, brother of Lord Dynevor.
No one in the family had heard of Caroline at that point and that's were they started to build a family tree, I assume.
Caroline was born in London in 1859 and according to her baptism, her mother was Mary Culpitt. They lived at 71 Grange Street, Hoxton. Her mother Mary was noted as an Organist (Same church as Caroline's baptism). No father was mentioned.
In 1871 Census Caroline was in St. Margaret's Orphanage for Girls in East Grindstead at the age of 12. 10 years later Caroline is still there but working as a Servant.
1901 - 1911 Censuses, Caroline is now working for the Dynevor family as a Nurse/Nanny and later she became the Housekeeper. The Dynevor family let Caroline stay at Dynevor Castle when she retired until her death in 1952.
This is were a few spanners are thrown into the works by me....at first I couldn't find Caroline in 1861 Census or her mother. The surname was misspelled as Culptt, and there's a Caroline living at 71 Grange Street (coincidence or what), same age but there's a George Culpitt who is down as her father but no wife. The other member is Marion Culpitt aged 26 also down as his daughter.
Mary Culpitt was the daughter of Henry Culpitt and Mary Willis, who was born in 1836ish, as her baptism was in 1836.
It was first thought that Mary had died and that's why Caroline ended up in the Orphanage, probably earlier than 1871.
My spanner in the works, doesn't look right at all as George Culpitt was from Ipswich and doesn't appear to fit into the other family tree.
I can only think that the baptism is wrong, but how many Caroline Mary Culpitt's were born in 1859 and baptised living at 71 Grange Street?
Maybe the birth certifcate will help...
What do you guys think?
Colin
