Marion is Georgeís daughter.  Caroline is Marionís daughter.  Enumerator error when recording the relationship.  George was 64 & a widower & had been since before the 1841 census

In 1841 - Marion Culpitt aged 6 is living in Kent - shown as not born in county & not with any parent.  Living with a Mary Stedman

In 1851 she is again Marion & living with Mary Stedman.  Shown as niece & born Cripplegate

There appears that 2 Mary Culpitts died in 1862 in London, one being August 1862 and the other in Sept 1862.

August was the burial and the other record was the death, but it said Sept..... so Sept Qtr.

There was only one death, August is in the September quarter (July/ August/September).

If so, then how can she have the same baptism living at 7 Grange Street, Hoxton and then in 1861 Census George Culpitt is living there with 2 so called daughters and one being Caroline born the same year as her Caroline...

You always need to use some critical thinking when looking at census records.  Seeing two people recorded as daughters, one is 26 and the other aged 2 should indicate that it might need further research.  Of course it is not impossible but it is one of those things that should be followed up.

Hi
Thank you for further replies.

How did you get the ages of both George Culpitt's, Jon? If I had seen the ages I would have dismissed straightaway. Just seen a family called Culpitt in Kensington so it is more than likely their family member.

I realised that it meant the Sept Qtr Debra after I posted it but thanks to clarify it. It was getting late and I was getting confused.

That's how I see it Carole, Marion was born Mary in 1835 and was baptised. She died in 1862 and her name was back to Mary.

The other family of Culpit's that I am doing the tree for, information was passed to me. When one of the grt aunties died in 1994 she had a piece of note paper that mentioned Caroline on it and so now it looks like she belonged to the other Culpitt family. As you would expect, they aren't happy with my findings.

In 1994, there was no internet so how did she have this knowledge, maybe both families knew each other...

Hi,

Jon might have been using the GRO site,

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp

You have to register but it's free to search :)

Hi
Thank you Daisypetal you are right.

I didn't know you could search on that website, I have always had correct details before ordering certificates.

I will use that website from now on to just to check the details.

Hi
Yes it's the main place based in Southport, Merseyside that has all the certificates and when I need a certificate I use them.
