Where were 'Oxford Buildings' BRISTOL 1841, 51, 61
« on: Sunday 19 September 21 12:25 BST (UK) »
1. Seeking the accurate location of 'Oxford Buildings' which were (I believe) in St Philip & Jacob Parish, Bristol, Gloucestershire.
Are they related to Oxford Road?

2. Also: is the 'Oxford Road' on the 19th century Bristol censuses the same as the Oxford Street shown on later maps, which appears to be in the same place?

The general area is next to the railway lines; another road (for reference) may be Avon Street, Bristol.

Any clarification very welcome, many thanks.

Just noting this for the moment.  There is an Oxford Buildings on the 1841 census which appears to be sandwiched in Princes Place in Clifton.

1841 ref:-

Registration district Clifton
Piece number 377
Book number 4
Folio number 15
Page number 24

View the image so that you can see for yourself.

I'll check the 1851 and see if it appears on there.

Interesting - No Oxford Buildings in 1851 census but an Oxford Place.  I looked at the image and at the bottom end there is 7 Princes Place and the next address is 1 Oxford Place.

Could Oxford Buildings have been renamed Oxford Place?

Chap living in 1, Oxford Place, Clifton, Gloucestershire is a William Wood

Thank you so much for your help :-)
It's not Clifton.

To assist: On the 1851 census, search for Jacob Emery age 25, living in Oxford Buildings [St Philip & Jacob] - this is the place I'm investigating.

(I'm not researching the Emerys, I'm trying to pin down the location).

The 1861 shows two roads called Oxford Place, one in the parish of Clifton, the other in the parish of St. Philip & St. Jacob.

The St. P & J on the image has Regent Terrace followed by Oxford Place and then Oxford Street.

I had a look at the 1851 image and Oxford Buildings starts after what looks like Tribunal Cottages and finishes at number 13 Oxford Buildings.

I don't know if the enumerator's route would help you to place where Oxford Buildings was.

There is an enumerator's route as the next image after 13 Oxford Buildings, but I'm not clear as to whether it relates to the previous images.

The route says:-  All that part of St. Philip & St. Jacob (out) which lies between the GWR (for short) - Cook's Lane - and the back of Marsh Lane - comprising Waterloo Place - Freestone Rank - Freestone Road - Northam's Houses - the houses fronting Cook's Road and all courts and houses within those limits.

I don't know if those roads may help you place Oxford Buildings.

You could consider contacting Bristol Records Office and see if they can help you with Oxford Buildings.  Link to their contact page:-

There is a phone number on this page - look to the right.
