Searching for information on the Townsley Family (Campbeltown and Ireland)
« on: Sunday 19 September 21 21:13 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

This is my first post.

I am currently filling out my family tree on Ancestry. I do not have much information on my mothers side of the family, which is what I am most interested in.

I am from the Townsley family. My gran has sadly passed, so I cannot ask her anything on my great grandparents. My gran and mother both grew up in Campbeltown, where my great grandparents settled as travellers. They lived in a tent with approximately 16 kids, my gran being one of them.

My mother said she heard they traveled from Ireland. I have my great grandfathers name and death date - George Townsley- died 24 Jan you 1990 aged 75. My great grandmothers name was Mary Townsley, but I cannot find details of her death or birth anywhere.

My mother once saw a oil painting of my grandparents in a newsagents in Campbeltown, maybe 15 years ago.

My Grans name was Agnes Townsley, she lived in Campbeltown/ Machrihanish all her life. She had 4 kids- *.
I only know one of her siblings names- *. She has one child *. They both still live in *.

If anyone has any information I would be deeply grateful.

Thanks! Jade Townsley

Hello Jade welcome to Roots Chat.

Maybe the Moderators will move you to the Argyll Board where those who know the area and the people might best respond.

What would be great is if you could post the maiden names its easier to find the correct Marriages/Births.

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

Are you familiar with the site Scotlands People? You can search for free but need to purchase credits for the records.

Looking at the birth index, there is a George Townsley, born 1915, Campbeltown.
You can search 1911 census on that site too.

Looking at the Scottish censuses up to 1901, I can only see Townsley births in Ireland in Campbeltown in the 1841 census.
That was Robert,  60 yrs and Janeta Townsley, 58 yrs . Robert was a Tinsmith.
1851 also shows ‘Ratchel’ Townsley, 80 yrs who is described as ‘Formerly a Tinsmith’s wife’.
These are transcripts so the two females might be the same person  :-\

Hi all,

Thank you for your reply’s!
I unfortunately don’t know My great grandmother’s maiden name, only as Mary Townsley.

I will definitely add a post to the Argyll chat so see if anyone has info! I will also have a look on the website you recommend!

Thank you for taking the time to help me!
