Hansen siblings from Blyth
« on: Monday 20 September 21 17:01 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if anyone could help date the boy in the attached photo. The girls are his sisters and the one on the left was born in 1903 and the elder one (my grandma) was born in 1897. I originally thought it was one brother born 1895 before I learned of the younger brother born 1901. Hopefully I can amend my tree and make sure it is correct.

I would suggest this was taken around 1914/15 and he looks to be in his late teens. He appears to have what look like two wound stripes on his left sleeve.

He looks about 15-16-ish to me, which would mean that it would be taken about 1916-1917, if he was the one born 1901.

Looking at it again (enlarged) he does look older than I first thought - late teens, as Carol suggested.

Young sister, on left, looks about 13-14

Wound stripes were introduced mid 1916 so that's the earliest this can be.
Also a L/Cpl. so more likely someone born 1891.
What are the sons names?

I think Henry (1895) and Baden (1901), Jim

I looked last night so this from memory  :) ;D

Add - I think this is the family in 1901 - much larger in the next one.

1901 - RG13/ 4812/ 68/ 36

Firstly, that you for your prompt replies. Your information has helped me in confirming which of the brothers it is. I posted the photo in my tree thinking it was Henry Hansen b. 1895 not knowing there was William Hansen b. 1901. This would put him between his two sisters Elizabeth and Catherine as on the photo.
Gadget, you are correct in the family on both the 1901 and 1911 censuses even though some of the spellings and names are slightly different due to the father Christopher (born Hans Christian Hansen) was Norwegian.
I wonder if anyone can explain about the wound stripes? I have found Williams military record and it seems he was discharged due to a hearing impairment he got while in the merchant navy. Looking at his record the photo has to be 1920.

Thank you so much for clearing my foggy brain.
Emma.

Ah I see.

I thought it was Baden but it was William, who doesn't show up until the 1911. They must have been very close in age - Baden Q3 in 1900 and William Q1 in 1902.

I had never even noticed that. Just looked at my records and there was Joseph b jan 1899, Baden b. 24 June 1900 and William b. 19 Dec 1901. Poor woman had ten children!!
When I first started looking at family tree the problem was “ where do I start?” So I remember my grandma had brother named Baden and their surname was Hansen with an E, norwegian. That is where it all started for me and I’m still chipping away.
