John Mellor born Meltham Yorkshire 1856

Hi,

John Mellor was my great grandfather, who emigrated to Australia. John was born in Meltham, Yorkshire.

I am unable to locate any information on his parents, John Mellor, carpenter & Harriet Garlic? These names are as recorded on John's death certificate as provided by his son, Percy, my grandfather.

Is he the John Mellor whose mother Harriet married Edward Dawson in 1858? If so it looks like he was illegitimate. She was a spinster on marriage.   

Is he the John Mellor who married Betty Dawson in 1878? No father's name on the marriage register - just a blank. I believe they had a son named Percy.

Yes, the John Mellor who's mother married Edward Dawson in 1858. John was my great, great grandfather.

You have confirmed the conclusion my cousin and I have arrived at  he was illegitimate.

John & Betty Mellor were my great grand parents who emigrated to Australia. There were 5 children, the oldest 2 died in infancy, leaving Jane known as Jean, Percy & Clara all of whom lived into their 80ies.
