Will of John Moone of Staithes 1674
« on: Tuesday 21 September 21 18:57 BST (UK) »
I have managed to read this Will but am unable to read some writing which appears in the left margin, alongside the final lines of the Will and the names of the witnesses.  Does anyone know what it could mean, please?  Is it Cx ? and then a name?

Thank you,
Tilly

I think it’s ... Ex(aminat)ur p(er) me (= ‘it is examined by me’), and below it an abbreviated first name and a surname, presumably the church official.

Thank you, Bookbox, that's sounds good to me.

The only other bit of Latin in the Will was this next snip.  I think it is Ad pius usus.  It appears in the sentence: I give and bequeath: (Ad pius usus) to bee distributed att the discretion of my executor to every poor Widdow within the parish of Hinderwell Two Shillings to old men Twelve pence and the rest as theire disposers thinks convenient.

Does it mean that the money would only be given to the pious, i.e. churchgoers or devout persons?

It just means ‘for the use of the church’, without relating to specific individuals.

Several years ago I posted on Rootschat details of a standard Latin probate. Just search for that, it must be 10 years back, and it may be helpful.
