Help with another 1851 census record please
« on: Wednesday 22 September 21 07:39 BST (UK) »
This record is for Henry Maycock born 1839 Coventry.  Mother died 1843.  In this record he is a pauper in the workhouse aged 12.  Looking for help with one word -  does it say deserted?
Would this description be used if his parents had died or would 'orphaned' be used?

Thanks,
Jen.

Hi

Yes, it looks like deserted.

The one above says orphan so I would say his father grandparents are still alive so they have said he was deserted so they can try and get some money out of the family.

Thankyou John.  Very sad,  had 4 much older siblings yet still deserted.  Guess times were tough
