William McDonald St Pancras 1851
« on: Thursday 23 September 21 18:56 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have a William McDonald aged 6 in St Pancras in 1851.
He seems to be in some sort of school , the page before gives a name but I can t read it, it appears to be near Powis Place.
Also all the boys on the page have what appears to be "visitor" in relationship column, but not quite sure if it says that.
Would be grateful for thoughts where this might be in St Pancras.
Thanks
Cathy

Sarah Kay who is first on the list is a teacher but the addresses are different on the 2 pages of entries.

Writing is awful but first page is something "house"

Yes the writing is terrible, the address on the page does nt look like Powis Place or the address where Sarah is, but as the entries for that page are similar to the page before I thought it might be the same establishment, but it might not be .
Thanks
Cathy :)

She was Sarah Hay - not Kay & address in 1861 is Massingham House Powis Place.  All the children listed are shown as pupils

Not sure if this helps, but Powis Place was/is very near to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Given all the "visitors" are children on that page, could Powis Place have been some sort of boarding house for children needing to visit the hospital? I think there was a Neurology hospital nearby, as well.

I do note that GOSH didn't officially open until 1852.

Thankyou both, I think you are right Carole, I have just found Massingham House, 2 Powis place on the 1861, I think you ve cracked it!
Hillhurst, I think that s a very good theory and a good possibility.
Thanks
Cathy :)

Ah...
"Preparatory School for Young Gentlemen" Massingham House, it mentions Misses Hay.

Hmm.. possibly not my William (McDonagh missing in 1851 along with siblings) after all that, a son of an Irish couple who eloped to England to the Manchester mills and then onto Warwickshire. Though he was born in St Pancras in 1844. I have him in all other censuses.
The search goes on.
