Deptford Family.
« on: Saturday 25 September 21 16:00 BST (UK) »
Not expecting to get much of a response, but was wondering if anyone here remembers or knew of the Peckham family who lived at 3 Oscar Street, Deptford in the 1940s?
James and Frances (née Carpenter) Peckham and their children Audrey, Jean, Barbara, and Hilda.
Tragically, Frances along with all four daughters, were killed when their house was bombed on 20 January 1943.

I know this is all rather a long shot, but thought I'd try anyway.

Many thanks.  :)

Welcome to Rootschat

Rootschat has a strict "no living persons" policy & the daughter you name was only b 1948 so could still be alive.  You need to remove her name from your post.  Click on the "modify" button in the right hand corner of your post to edit it

She appears to have married in Sussex in 1968 & there is a possible birth there so you could perhaps look up the details using www.freebmd.org.uk then check www.192.com or www.thephonebook.com to look for a contact number or address

Hi Carole,

There doesn't seem to be a modify button.  ???
And if I want to post anything it continually says 'Note: this post will not display until it's been approved by a moderator.'  :-\

I suspect this is because you are a new member, you need to make 3 posts.  If you reply to this post, I believe that you will find that you can then modify your original message.🙂

If you look at the CWG website, you will find all four girls plus mum listed in the Civilian War dead.  The date was 20th January 1943.

Listed in freebmd

Deaths Mar 1943
PECKHAM    Audrey F    13    Deptford    1d   731
PECKHAM    Barbara J    5    Deptford    1d   730
PECKHAM    Frances M    42    Deptford    1d   731
PECKHAM    Hilda M    3    Deptford    1d   730
PECKHAM    Jean D    11    Deptford    1d   731

I think the likelihood of anyone remembering this family is probably low.

There is a short newspaper report Daily Herald 21 January 1943 page 3.

I agree with Girl Guide.  It is 78yrs ago since the tragedy & all of the adult neighbours will be deceased.  Families will have been rehoused elsewhere following the bombing so any children from that time will now either be deceased or in their 80's or 90's.

Hi Girl Guide

The opening post has been edited but originally included info re second marriage.  See my reply #1 re 1968 marriage which relates to the daughter from that marriage

You've lost me a bit Carole.  All four children died in 1943 so who does the daughter born 1948 belong to?

I could not find any births from James's second marriage.  Have I missed something somewhere?
