John Ruddell; Ballintaggart; d. 21/8/1898; Birth date? Parents?
« on: Sunday 26 September 21 06:15 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters,

I am stuck on John Ruddell's birth date and parents!
Can anyone with more experience and access to Irish records help me, please?

I know John died on 21/8/1898 and I have found his will.
I cannot prove his date of birth and have no proof of his parents' names.
I am estimating that he was born in Armagh in about 1820.
I think he married Mary Anne McCausland/McAusland at Vinecash, Armagh in 1842.

Can anyone help me, please?
Thanks in advance for your efforts.

For folk reading your topic, here is the 1898 death registration:

My initial reaction, given that the informant was a son called Samuel residing at Ballintaggart, is to question if this was that son Samuel in the 1901 census?

There was also a Samuel Ruddell of Ballintaggart who married Rachel Brownlees the same year:

This looks like Samuel, Rachel and family in 1911:

The 1901 census suggests Samuel was born c.1869, the 1911 census suggests c.1866, but I'm struggling to find a good candidate in the civil birth registrations.

I can see a transcript of a baptism at Thomas Street Methodist Church, Portadown, for a Samuel Alfred Ruddell, the address was Ballintaggart, it took place a bit earlier than expected (12 September 1862), which is no big deal, but the mother's name doesn't fit with the idea of Mary Anne McCausland (the parents in this baptismal record were given as John and Eliza Jane Ruddell).  So my jury's out.  And there are quite a few Ruddells to tease apart in this area.  So fresh eyes probably needed.

Edited to add: Just to add on the 'John and Eliza Jane Ruddell' line of thinking, that there was a John Ruddell of Ballintaggart who married an Eliza Jane Humphreys in 1861, this couple had a run of children right through to the early 1880s, whom one can find on the 'irishgenealogy' website, here's the marriage registration:

... I know John died on 21/8/1898 and I have found his will.

If you have read his will, did it identify his children and if so, were you able to identify them in the 1901 census and can you post details?

There were so many Ruddells in Ballintaggart. All farmers. Its very confusing.
