Susannah Prosser vs. Susannah Prosser
« on: Sunday 26 September 21 22:30 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I've looking into one specific line and have gotten back to a "Susannah Prosser", found thanks to the Herefordshire Bishop Transcripts on FamilySearch. However, things have gotten a bit dicey as when searching for a birth record, I see there were two such women who could potentially match. They were both born in Bodenham, Herefordshire, and in 1721. They both have christening/baptism records, one on June 10th and the other on October 8th. Both fathers are called Thomas, though the mothers have different names - Joan (June) and Mary (October).

The Familysearch profile has used both dates on one profile, as the birth and baptism/christening respectively. Considering that the mothers have different names though, this is surely a mistake?

What a kerfuffle!  ???

So, is your question which of them is “yours”?
If so, what are the names of “your” Susannah’s children?

Yes.

Our lass married a John Hadland in Ullingswick, and an Ancestry search pins down five children. My direct ancestor is the youngest, Thomas.

well,  not a Joan or Mary among them. How frustrating!

This is a real long shot but famsearch says a Susannah Prosser 1721-1796 was buried in ullingswick april 1796.

If she had a headstone it may say loving dau of x and y.

Ullingswick graveyard has been levelled and tidied and looks cared for, it is possible that when this was done a list of mon. inscriptions was made.

The village has an active Facebook page, an enquiry there just may yield fruit.

I know it’s a remote chance but maybe worth a try

I ended up asking and someone kindly went enquiring. She asked the churchwarden but they only keep records back to the 1950s. The oldest gravestones are from the late 1800s too.

More lateral thinking has enabled me to come one step forward and two back. I found this will. By chance, when going back over marriage records, I found one which comes with a note about Susannah's husband, John - "GROOM OF MORETON JEFFERIES".

A Prosser with a Hadland son-in-law, from what (now at least) is a tiny village. Except the names aren't matching up.

This story has more loops than a bowl of Cheerios.

I know Prosser is quite prominent in these parts but there are a few Thomas Prossers buried in Ullingswick and also a Joan.

Hi, thanks!

Given that the second row of names appear amongst Susannah's kids, but none from the first, that's as much confirmation as I think I'll get.
