Rev Edmund Arthur Algernon Read Burial place
« on: Monday 27 September 21 16:09 BST (UK) »
Hi Would anyone know if a member of the clergy be cremated or would they have to be buried?  I am looking for the burial place for a Rev Edmund Arthur Algernon Read who died in 1954.  I have his death certificated and Will but do not know where he is laid to rest.  I know all about his life and his family.  He died in Dorking Surrey in a nursing home but lived in Carshalton.  He did live in the Brighton area for a while and this is where my interest lies connecting to my family tree.  Any advice would be helpful.  Hope this is ok as this is my first post on here. Many thanks

According to a previous thread he resided in Brockham but died in a nursing home in Sutton. Which is right?

Perhaps the 2 posts should be merged as you are both asking the same question.  Previous post was 2020 so possibly the info has now been found

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

Have you considered local newspapers for the area?  There may have been an obit in one of those.  I see that he was 90 years old when he died.

Do you know which religion he was?  Cof E, Roman Catholic, Baptist etc?

Unless I was doing it wrong, I couldn't see him on Crockfords which makes me wonder if he wasn't C of E.

The 1911 just says clerk in holy orders and the 1939 states retired priest, so no indication as to which religion he belonged.

I'm happy to be corrected, but I'm pretty sure that 'Clerk in Holy Orders' would only refer to a Church of England priest.

Yes you are quite right, it is C of E.  I've had another look at the Crockford's website and it looks as though it doesn't cover 1954 era.
