Convict Nelson Malta 1859
« on: Tuesday 28 September 21 03:54 BST (UK) »
Having great difficulty in obtaining NOK details on James Nelson. Born 1841 Shankill Belfast   He joined the 3rd Regiment of Kent ( the Buffs) in Limerick in 1857. Age 17-18; was sent to Malta where he was Courts Martialed  in 1860 for shooting at his superior officer. Sentenced to ten years transportation to Perth Australia. As a condition of sentence his records ,ie NOK were expunged ,because of this I can’t trace his family in Ireland.   Can you tell me if there would be the original records of his enlistment with details of his parents etc.  I have exhausted all sites as far as I know including Proni who only have birth details from 1864.  I tried the Archives at Kew, but need a certificate of tech to understand the system.  I have a post on this  but it was seven years ago.  Unfortunately I have been offline since then due to the passing of my husband.     I would appreciate any advise       Dalek

Not sure if you are aware, but looking at the criminal registers on FindMyPast, he has a sister Emma.

This is the FindMyPast record that mentions his sister Emma, referred to by Middlesbrough: https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=TNA%2FCCC%2FPCOM2%2F042%2F00155&parentid=TNA%2FCCC%2F2B%2FPCOM2%2F00868298

It's an 1860 register from Millbank Prison.

Another one: is the Dublin address 22 Camden Street?

Possible marriage for "Emma"? 1863, Dublin, Emily Nelson, father James Nelson, wine merchant.
