Help with Cause of Death that looks like 'Stoping'
« on: Wednesday 29 September 21 00:48 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please tell me what the cause of death was in this death register? The only thing I can think of is choking, but it does not look like the other Capital Cs on the page.
Someone suggested the following. 'Stop(p)ing - I believe I have read some discussion on this elsewhere, for which I cannot now find the reference. It seemed to refer to small children either simply ceasing to breathe, which might equate to what we now know as SIDS 'sudden infant death syndrome', or general decline in infancy, sometimes recorded as 'failure to thrive'.
Thanks, Dianne

I agree with this reading.  It's definitely not Choking.

The Dictionaries of the Scots Language website has this regarding respiratory diseases:

https://dsl.ac.uk/entry/snd/stop

See:  2. Derivs

Hi Dianne.

I think the word is "Consumption". That would tie in with the prevalence of TB (aka consumption) in England (a quarter of my ancestors died from it).

Hope that helps.

Peter

Thanks horselydown86 re: https://dsl.ac.uk/entry/snd/stop

(2) stopping, constricted breathing due to some affection of the chest, specif. bronchitis, asthma or croup.
This seems to fit with an 18 month child.

Hi Dianne.

Sorry for the false start! I have just checked this site:

https://libraries.uc.edu/content/dam/libraries/arb/docs/local-government/medterms.pdf

It records the following as a diagnosis of the times: Intussusception Slipping or passing of one part of intestine into another; forms sausage shape tumour in abdomen. Passage of blood and mucus per rectum.

I wonder whether this might have been the cause of death? Slipping/Sliping is a lot easier to spell than intussusception!

Worth a thought?

Peter
