Royal Artillery, WW1 era, possibly Royal Horse Artillery though the shoulder title isn't clear. Others may be able to identify the medal ribbon.

I've cropped out the hand to make it easier to view:

Wonderful! Thankyou so much, by chance is there any method or website I can use to see if there are any war documents relating to him?

Both Ancestry and Findmypast have Military records for that time, but don’t be surprised if you don’t find what you are looking for. Between 60% and 70% were lost in a fire in WW2.

That's what I was thinking. But no British War Medal or Victory Medal ribbons. So that would date the photograph to 1919 or thereabouts, after the 1914-15 Star was authorised but before the other two were issued.

If so, it tells us that he served overseas in 1914-15.

Thankyou so much for the help everyone! How old do you think the man in the photo is? I was told by my grandmother that he passed away in 1895, so the whole situation is baffling - the man we always thought it was, now is not!  ???
