Date woman & child CdV, Gibson of Hexham
« on: Wednesday 29 September 21 14:07 BST (UK) »
Am I right in thinking that this one is early-mid 1860's?

The woman is possibly holding a photograph - what do you think?

Thanks for any help you can give.

(No restoration needed  :) )

This looks to be 1870s as that is when the Oval mount became popular although the dress style appears to be 1860s. My first impression was that of a lock of hair but it could be a photo. Great image, although there is a sadness about the lady.

Yes, I have several Gibson CdV's with rounded corners, all dated mid to late 1860's.

I checked the other CdV's I've got which are on this cardstock and they've all been dated (here on RC) as mid-late 1860's  :-\

Confusing  :-\

I've had another look at a Shrimpton book, which does have one oval/circle as an example, and go with mid-late 1860s. Gibson was an experimenter.

PS - I can't work out whether the lady's ears are showing or not. If not, then it's before mid 60s.

Yes I see her ears are partly on view Gadget. I remember being caught out before by considering the rounded corners and popular oval mount, If I remember correctly, Jim suggested that the photographer possibly made his own cards stock. I must admit, there was an element of doubt in my guesstimate.
