Susan SINGLETON
« on: Wednesday 29 September 21 15:51 BST (UK) »
Susan SINGLETON married Arthur JOEL/JEWELL on 10 Dec 1873 at Stroud in Gloucestershire. According to the marriage certificate, she a spinster, aged 18. Her father was Edward SINGLETON (dcd), a shoe-maker.

In 1881, she is aged 27, and in 1891, she is 35. In both censuses, her place of birth is given as Bristol.

All of the above, points to her being born c1855 in Bristol.

Despite the above information, her early life remains a mystery. I can find (a) no BMD record of her birth, (b) any baptism record, (c) in the 1861 census, or (d) the 1871 census.

She died in 1897 in Stroud, at the early age of 41. Although her death was widely reported in the local press, I can find (e) no burial record.

It seems strange that she could have spent 41 years on this planet and left behind so few records.

Many thanks. I assume that Bedminster is in Bristol. My North London roots never ventured into that area.

Free BMD entry is the same as Capetown found - Susannah Singleton.

As for early census perhaps her mother remarried and she is under that surname?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Looking at Freebmd:

Bedminster, in 1889 the part of the parish of Bedminster in Bristol County Borough became part of Somerset.

Apart from Susannah in 1853 - just the marriage of a George SINGLETON - June 1861 and the birth of Wilson James SINGLETON in 1861 (Bedminster District).

Milliepede - that is of course correct, but hard to proceed without knowing the names of her parents. I have sent for the PDF of her birth, which should provide some clues to help further exploration.

Many thanks - that is certainly interesting.

The family appear to be in Bridgwater in Somerset in 1851 [HO107 1925 17 27].

It would appear that Susan's mother, who was also named Susan SINGLETON re-married in 1871 to Thomas WOOLLEY. The marriage was on 09 Apr 1871 at Winstone, Glos. Thomas was a widower and can be found in Winstone in 1861 with his first wife.

The location of Susan herself in 1861 and 1871 remains a mystery.
