Tasmania: John TOYNE (TYNE??), Died 07/12/1887
« on: Thursday 30 September 21 13:54 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Libraries Tasmania citation: RGD35/1/56, No.455 records the above death.   Are there any other death records that may indicate either his birth place or parents or both?

Thank you for your help

There is a hospital report on Trove of a John Toyne of English nationality.
Also on FindMyPast a death record, 1887,  Launceston Hospital.
7 Dec 1887, 60yrs, groom, haemorrhagic apoplexy.

Thank you middlesbrough,

The FindMyPast reference is the same as that of Libraries Tasmania, but that for TROVE is extremely helpful in one respect.......it mentions he is English.   If he was in fact John TYNE (?) he was Dublin born, migrated to London in his childhood and when aged 10 tried at the Old Bailey and subsequently transported to Western Australia.   He may have made his way later to Tasmania via an American whaler.

A complicated and almost heroic story.  Hence the necessity of trying to establish his correct ancestry 8)

Ancestry.com.au has original images of Tasmania Land Grants. In 1865/66 John Tyne was granted 10  acres at Bracknell which is SE of Launceston.
Trove.nla.gov.au has an advertisement 17/7/1898 for the sale of the above land "original land grant to John Tyne deceased"
I'm wondering if this is your man?

Thank you shume,

All information adds to the potential picture of John TOYNE (TYNE??), but the vital connection of finding his birth place still eludes successful searching sadly!!!

There was a John Toyne convicted at Lincoln for 10 years for horse stealing and sent to VDL aboard the ship Layton in 1841, aged 19.  His occupation per the indent was plowman & farm servant.

His convict record has been indexed as Foyne.

The age is a few years out for the death in 1887, but the occupation of groom noted at death would broadly tie in.

This is an entry on Wikitree, not sure if you've seen it but some of the "facts " are unsourced.

I checked www.irishgenealogy.ie for the Church records C of I and RC for Dublin..mostly original images but nothing for Tyne. His death notice from Trove has him as English, not Irish. But of course that is after the fact. He may have thought he was born Dublin when he was arrested aged 10?
I can't begin to imagine what it was like for a 10yr old boy to be imprisoned on a Hulk with all those hardened convicts.

Are you sure that John TYNE actually went to Australia?  There is a record of him being removed from the hulk York and transferred to Parkhurst Prison in December 1838.  It also confirms he was convicted December 1837 aged 10, so it's definitely the boy mentioned in your earlier post.

Following on from the above, there is a John TYNE in the 1841 census in Parkhurst Prison, Isle of Wight, aged 13, not born in County
