William Walpole CLARKE 1857-1937
« on: Monday 04 October 21 04:24 BST (UK) »
William arrived in Victoria prior to 1888 as he married Emily RUTHERFORD at St Georges Church, Nhill on 10 July 1888. Left not long after as their first child was born back in England in April 1889. He was born in India, went to Oxford University in England and was a clergyman.

Trying to establish when he did arrive and whether or not he had one of his sisters with him. His sister was Ethel Douglas CLARKE and at some time in 1888 or 1889 she arrived in New Zealand, as she married there in Nov 1889.

Have looked through various passenger lists but so far drawn a blank.

Hoping some fresh eyes can find something.

Many thanks
Ian C

Can't help with finding his arrival in Australia, however he is mentioned in an article as a schoolboy in Dedham Grammar School in 1871. Happy to copy if you haven't seen it.

This might be him, shortly before his ordination:

Yes I'd been wondering the same via the actual passenger list, but his age made me doubt myself.

Thanks everyone that looks like his arrival in Australia, unfortunately no reference to his younger sister so she must have come to NZ direct from UK.

WWC was born in Nilghiri Hills in India in 1857 so his age must have been rounded up in passenger list.

http://anglicanhistory.org/aus/cci/index.pdf   His entry at that resource is quite extensive, but it does NOT mention the year of arrival or the name of the ship....  :-X   It does confirm details kindly posted by Judith  :)

His father baptised him William Walpole on 14 September 1857 at  Ootacamund Palamcoottah  :)
