The book (by Karl Ritter von Scherzer) was dedicated to Sir Roderick Impey Murchison so that presumably is Murchison's signature at the bottom.

My dear Sir,
I most willingly accede to your flattering request that * your account of the voyage of the frigate Novara be dedicated to me.
*3 words were missing between that and your: I would allow
For the word in the last sentence ( your ... and yourself) I haven't got a clue.
Last line above the signature reads Yours sincerely

Thanks to Zefiro for picking up my omission.

Putting it all together:

My dear Sir,
I most willingly accede to your flattering request that I would allow your account of the voyage of the Novara frigate to be dedicated to me.

Having taken a deep interest in the success of this praiseworthy effort of the Austrian government to enlarge the bounds of scientific knowledge I had a true gratification in knowing that the conduct of the expedition was entrusted to the able hands and heads of your..?...and yourself.

Yours sincerely

I think Bookbox has identified the missing word correctly.

Perhaps Shlepad will leave some comment or acknowledgement next time he/she passes by.

 :)

I am interested in hearing more about the book.  I am in Australia, and in among my family papers are letters from the late 1850s and into the 1860s between one of my NSW based families and their New Zealand based cousins.  Theres a number of mentions of the Novara  voyage and scientific discoveries.

I too hope Shiepad comes by soon.  Great deciphering on the longhand penmanship.
