Edward Gibbons 1881 census
« on: Wednesday 06 October 21 16:19 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for more information on Edward Gibbons born India 17 Aug 1865.
I have seen a criminal record in 1882 Kilmainam jail Dublin where it says his Birth year is 1863 and he is 19 but wonder if he's saying he is older than he is or this is a different person? I can't find a census for 1881 with him on.
Any ideas thanks.

Only the 1901 and 1911 Ireland censuses survive in full.
For other censuses, only remnants remain.

There was an Edward Gibbons born in India in September 1862 who would be the right age for that Irish prison record. Son of Michael and Mary, 52nd Light Infantry.

I see army birth returns have two more Edward Gibbons born in India that year, fathers in 37th and 101st regiments

Fragments survive for 1821 – 1851 for some counties, as follows:

Antrim, 1851; Belfast city (one ward only), 1851; Cavan, 1821 and 1841; Cork, 1841; Dublin city (index to heads of household only), 1851; Fermanagh, 1821, 1841 and 1851; Galway, 1813 (numerical returns for Longford barony) and 1821; King’s County (Offaly), 1821; Londonderry (Derry), 1831 – 34; Meath, 1821; Waterford, 1841.

The original census returns for 1861 and 1871 were destroyed shortly after the censuses were taken.

Those for 1881 and 1891 were pulped during the First World War, probably because of the paper shortage.

The returns for 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851 were, apart from a few survivals, notably for a few counties for 1821 and 1831, destroyed in 1922 in the fire at the Public Record Office at the beginning of the Civil War.

Thanks for your replies. My Edward Gibbons had parents Edward and Elizabeth. They returned from India to Newbury Berkshire England in 1873 but no sign of young Edward. I thought that he may have left for Ireland as his Father went into Reading gaol on 1879 for 2 years. I'll have to re think this.

There is this death:
1877 December 2c pg 148 Newbury, Berkshire
Edward Gibbons, 12 yrs

A newspaper snippet dated 13th December 1877 seems to indicate that he is son of Edward.
