James Fitzgerald, born c1780, Liverpool
« on: Friday 08 October 21 11:54 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Mary Fitzgerald was the fourth g grandmother of my husband.  She was born on 14 February 1802 and baptised at St Mary's RC Church, Liverpool on 21 February 1802.  It shows her father as James Fitzgerald and mother Helen.

I'd really like to find the marriage of James and Helen to find her surname.

It would appear that St Mary's was founded in 1707 and records are at the Liverpool Records Office, but I can't work out how to access.

Can anyone help?

Thanks :-)

Ancestry have Liverpool RC marriages from 1754, but I can't readily see an entry for James Fitzgerald and Helen
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks.  Both names are shown on Mary's baptism and I'd hoped they had married around the same area.  Mary married Robert Beattie in St Peter's, Liverpool (not RC I think) in 1823 and I think married again to William Dawson in St Nicholas, Liverpool.

The early RC Liverpool records were from Recusant families then as time went on more and more Irish people appear in the records. They could be both Irish and have married in Ireland or he might be Irish and she English. The absence of a local marriage suggests they married in Ireland. One of my ancestors was Irish married a local RC in the C of E church as they did back then and later baptised their children in the RC.

How interesting, Blue.  Thanks.

Are there Irish records?  Helen doesn't sound like a particularly Irish or RC name ...

Thanks garstonite,

Robert Beaty's father was named as Batty yet all Robert & Mary Fitzgerald's children were Beattie apart from Margaret which was Beatty.

List of churches in Liverpool Central
www.lan-opc.org.uk/Liverpool/Liverpool-Central/index.html
There were 2 St. Peter churches, Anglican and Catholic.
Everyone except Jews and Quakers had to marry in C. of E. until 1837. Some Catholics had an additional religious wedding ceremony in a Catholic church.
Added. The marriage was at St. Peter C. of E.
