Stuck on Stella
« on: Friday 08 October 21 16:24 BST (UK) »
Stella Collins was born abt 1884 in Illinois. She married William John Franklin "Frank" Lumley 20 Apr 1915 in Michigan. In 1920 they are Living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Frank dies 15 Aug 1928 Tulsa. Stella appears in the 1931 and 32 Tulsa Directory as widow of Frank and living at different addresses so I presume that the Directories are accurate and not simply a carryover from previous years. Having said that there is a marriage for a Stella Lumley(1884) of Tulsa 1 Dec 1928 Nowata, OK to C F Disney of Coffeyville, Kansas. C F Disney appears to be Charles Franklin Disney (1881-1951).He appears on Find a Grave with a bio but it does not mention Stella.
Under either scenario I can not trace my Stella.

Per the 1930 census, Stella Disney, wife of C F Disney, was born in Illinois circa 1884.

There are numerous stories about Frank Disney's death in 1931, as well as possible motives.

Homemade Bomb
Disney was a member of the structural steelworkers union, but his membership had lapsed and police discarded the theory that Disney might have had any participation in mutterings of labor sabotage in Tulsa. He is said to have come here from Coffeyville, Kan several years ago.

It was definitely established by Fire Chief R E (Dick) Pitts that the bomb was homemade, Pitts examined the premises immediately after the explosion.

No funeral arrangements have been made for Disney, Martin Fleming Undertaking company announced. Survivors are his wife, living at the Palace hotel, a niece Miss Stella Lumley of Tulsa, a son Jimmy Disney Denver Colo and two brothers Sam Disney of Cushing and John Disney of Coffeyville Kan.

Another article included these sentences-

"Hotel guests said Disney had been drinking heavily for the past week. He had been separated from his wife for several months"

Thanks RJ. If Frank had a niece named Stella then I am getting the feeling that he did not marry Stella Lumley nee Collins. As far as I am aware my Frank Lumley had one brother that married and he did not have a child named Stella.

Stella's brother Arthur died in  1948. His obit list his wife, two sons, and 4 grandchildren as surviving him. Was hoping his obit my give some clues about Stella, especially if she remarried again.

I suspect that this is a mistake by the reporter. Records show only one Stella Lumley in Tulsa - Frank's wife/widow.

Stella appears in the 1931 and 32 Tulsa Directory as widow of Frank Lumley - but not 1930 and 1929?
That would suggest to me that the 1928 marriage is her, but that either after her separation from Charles or his death in 1931 that she returned to using Lumley.

Looking at William F. Lumley's probate records, there was some land

Lots 53 and 54 Block 5  ("Baird Addition to Tulsa")

If you look at these records:
Historical Grantor/Grantee Deed Index (1898 to 1933)
Historical Platted Tract Index (Date of Plat to 1986)

 - Stella Lumley transferred this land to Ruth Marshall, July 30 1931, and it looks like Ruth paid $500 for it.  But weirdly, the same land was transferred back to Stella Lumley from Ruth and Lloyd Marshall in February 1932 - this time for a nominal $1. She then in May 1932 again transfers, for a nominal $1, to J A Spalding Co.  I can't find out what the abbreviations mean and whether these were partial transfers or something to do with loans, but it tells you she was definitely around - and using Lumley - in 1932.

Interesting to note that at marriage, both Stella and William say they have been married once before, and Stella does not list her parents' names. So quite possible she is not born Collins. In 1930 she gives her age at first marriage as 16 - so there is room there to determine more about her, and maybe records from earlier in her life will give you clues to what happened to her later.

Thanks jorose. I wonder why the real estate games? With a bit of luck she may show up in 1950 census.

Much appreciated
