1906 postcard handwriting
« on: Friday 08 October 21 19:03 BST (UK) »
I bought this card on ebay; it was sent by my great great grandad Brook Donkersley in 1906.  I can read mediaeval handwriting but I cannot work some of this out!  There are a few words I am not sure of, and I don't know who it's addressed to.
Oct 27th
Dear son and daughter.  Hope Norman [got alright?] and you may have fine weather.  Your ma has been up a [little?] to day Sunday and I think she stood it well for which we are [very?] pleased and hope it may continue.  From your affectionate Father and Ma

Background: He mentions his son Norman (1880-1917).  The postcard is a view of Buttermere in the Lake District; it was sent to an address in Blackpool and is stamped with Deepcar and Stocksbridge postmarks (near Sheffield) (dated 29 October 1906).  I can’t work out who it’s addressed to.  Brook's children were Gertrude (1874, married 1908), Wilfred (1877, married 1901, father of my grandad Brook, born June 1906), Norman (1880, married Elizabeth Ann Bond in 1909), Amy (1882, married 1907) and Clement (1884, married December 1906).

Everyone I ever spoke to about Brook who could remember him said he was a very stern, "Victorian" man but this lovely message shows another side to him.

Perhaps "hope Norman goes well" (is keeping well)

Your reading of the rest all looks to be correct.  Presumably Ma has been unwell.

Is it sent to Nrn.  So Norman.

And he has gone to the seaside with a sister (perhaps because he also hadn’t been well? )

The proprietor was Mrs. Dodds on the 1901 census, then in 1911 it was Mrs. Harrop.  She was actually born in Deepcar, so perhaps my family knew her!  Fascinating what you can find out when you scratch the surface.  She married Frederick Harrop in 1900 and was in her husband's home town of Mexborough in 1901 but by 1911 they were living apart.  He was working at Denaby Main colliery.  Thanks for the advert!

Thanks for that, I thought that was an "N" but couldn't make the rest out.  I thought the dot, as if there was a letter "i" might be a red herring.

Maybe it was written by Ma!

Anyways, just wanted to mention, in case you don't have it, his obituary has a photo of him:
Penistone, Stocksbridge and Hoyland Express 07 April 1934

Yes I have it as a clipping, but I think I will get a better copy of it from there, so thanks.  My clipping has definitely seen better days!
