I would suggest as she would have given the new name she didn't want speculation about her child so on some official documents chose to be called the same surname as the child and maybe it was only for a short time.

May well be something you will never be able to solve.  A possibility is that she used the father's name in an unofficial capacity and it was therefore recorded for that reason.

You can call yourself whatever you like as long as it is not for fraudulent reasons.

Is the father of the child on the 1939 Register?  If not he may well have been in one of the services by then.

Hi

Yes, possibly one of many riddles never solved.

Considering the time he could well have been on active service. Another line of enquiry I could follow.

Having only a surname I have no way of knowing who he was. I guess one puzzle I may never solve. That stings.
;D

Just one name on a distant line of ancestors that may remain unsolved. Oh the joys 😂

Thank you.

DNA could prove the father's family.

Hi

The name could have been added at any time after the birth so instead of medical records maybe it was required for schooling.

Thanks.

You really need to see the original page as that would give dates and the area where the adjustment was made.   The transcript could be wrong and relate to an adjoining record in the 'household'

DNA could prove the father's family.

It might be worth it. I found my grandfather's father this way. I only had first names and probable occupation.

What name was the child registered as - mother's maiden name, mother's married name or name of father?

Children weren't registered with surnames until about 1969.
If the father was named on the birth certificate, the registration would be indexed under both his surname and the mother's.  But that is just for indexing purposes.

Hi

Just to clarify, where weren't the children's surname registered? The general register?

Thanks.
