I never do anything anonymously I always do everything openly so I can be approached.

I do not use the site it comes up as a link on Ancestry which is how I found the mistake.

John

Yes, it is very sensible to always do everything openly, so it follows that your fellow RChatters should allow you the opportunity to openly contact Find A Grave.  You can do that without contacting Ancestry if that is a stumbling block for you.    https://www.findagrave.com/ and it is free to register so you can then contribute your suggested edit  https://www.findagrave.com/contribute

All that the anonymously does is not put your name on the link, I think you can still be 'approached'

Not sure why you are worried about it coming up on Ancestry.

Hi

JM I do not really want to register with the Find a Grave site and on finding that them accept anonymous posts it make even more less likely to want to register.

I do not have a problem with Ancestry, I only mentioned Ancestry to explain how I came across the error but you have given me the idea that I should contact Ancestry and get them to correct the error or get the link removed.

You have to register so that is not anonymous though like on any site you could give an alternative name as I doubt there is no way of checking who you are.  When you log in you are given the option as to what name you are identified by just like we are on here, isn't that anonymous.

The questions they ask to register are first name, last name, email, password and public name which if you don't fill in at the time of registering defaults to 'anonymous'.  Presumably this can be altered at a later date.

You didn't post the FindaGrave link.

What is to be corrected and do you have proof/original source ?

Thats  a CWGC headstone.   If there is something amiss,  perhaps John needs to consider contacting them.

Hi

Yes it is a CWGC headstone which was main reason I want it corrected.

I have decided to send a correction notice through Ancestry so if you are right it should have been altered or taken down.

Bear in mind that Ancestry's policy on amendments on their website is not to remove a wrong entry but just add an alternative.  If you contact the person who 'manages' that grave on findagrave they can alter the record and remove the wrong information

There is no point in writing to Ancestry - they can't correct or change a record on findagrave. The only way to get the findagrave memorial corrected is to write to the person who manages it on findagrave.

I am a member of findagrave which is a free site. I use a screen name (like I do here) which does not personally identify me. So I do not understand your reluctance to join findagrave and correct the entry yourself.

You didn't post the FindaGrave link.

One inaccuracy struck me straight away - if he died in Halifax he would not be buried in France. I wondered if he had been confused with another Harry Atkinson, but there is no death registration for a Harry Atkinson in Sept qtr 1916 in Halifax.
