1st Birth certificate before adoption
« on: Sunday 10 October 21 19:50 BST (UK) »
I have my grandads adoption papers and on them is his birth certificate number, he sadly passed away in 2010 would I be able to obtain his 1st birth certificate with this number on his adoption papers?

If its a number and not a GRO reference then I have no idea, but I would expect not through normal means? Hopefully someone with more experience can comment on that. I wonder if an enquiry to the original registry office would work.

If the number comes to nothing... I'm assuming you don't know his original birth name etc? If so, hoping you know the date and place of birth, you could look up births that would fit those criteria and see how many you can trace subsequently (thus ruling them out as being him). It might be more difficult to prove any remaining ones though.

Presumably if you have his adoption papers they should give you the name of his birth mother and his birth name. That should enable you to locate his original birth certificate, you will already know the year he was born, so it shouldn’t be two difficult.

I have all they above but I have nothing with the name he was born with, all his adoption papers have his new name and surname. I know his full birth name would just like a certificate.

So if I understand that correctly you do know his birth name but are unable to get a certificate for some reason?

Does his name not appear on birth indexes?  Not quite sure of the problem  :-\

You haven't said what country he was born in or adopted in so difficult to point you to links to find details you are looking for.

Do you mean the official paperwork regarding his adoption or the birth certificate that was issued AFTER his adoption (which would likely show new name and date of birth)?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I don’t understand either, usually the problem is discovering the birth name.

It should appear in the index as normal, when issued the certificate will be marked ‘Adopted’ in the margin. There is never anything  to link the the two in the index.

I've been interpreting this as she does not have his original birth name and needs to find the birth entry.
