Taylor Family of Sheffield
« on: Tuesday 12 October 21 18:06 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I’ve been taking a break from family history but thought I’d finally have another look at my elusive ancestor, Ann Taylor.

Here’s what I know about her:

Ann was married to Francis Sutcliffe on 11 November 1718 at the cathedral in Sheffield. Ann was of Sheffield but Francis was a “hardware man” from Wolverhampton.

Francis was buried 11 March 1721 at St Peter’s in Wolverhampton but it looks like they had a son, Francis Jr, who was baptised 1 July 1721 at Wakefield Cathedral. He may have been a posthumous son of Francis Sr?

Ann was buried 16 August 1733 in Wakefield. She was described as a widow of Westgate. Her son Francis Jr married Jane Clarkson in Sheffield in 1743 so it looks like he may have gone to his mother’s family after he was orphaned.

Today, I discovered that Ann’s husband died intestate but an order was made that allowed Ann to claim from his estate. One of the people named in this document was Tobias Ellis of Sheffield. A Tobias Ellis married an Elizabeth Taylor at Sheffield cathedral in 1714. Could she have been a sister of Ann?

I would love to try and link Elizabeth Taylor, wife of Tobias Ellis, with Ann Taylor, wife of Francis Sutcliffe, if this is possible. Any ideas where to start?

Did you mean to write ‘Elizabeth’? Tobias Ellis married Mary Taylor in 1714 at Ecclesfield.

I’ve seen a transcript of the marriage licence for Tobias Ellis and Elizabeth Taylor. Where have you seen her name as Mary Taylor?

As you say the transcription of the marriage licence does say Elizabeth Taylor BUT there are two images of the parish records (I'm assuming one in the BT's) and both state MARY Taylor.

Images available on FindMyPast.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Possible children for Tobias Ellis and Mary Taylor at Sheffield SS Peter and Paul:

14 March 1715 Tobias Ellis son of Tobias
20 June 1718 Anne Ellis dau of Tobias

Edit: There is a 1738 burial for Tobias Sr although I’ve not seen one for Mary yet

Thanks for the correction. I have a feeling that Mary and Ann were sisters, hence why Tobias, as Ann’s brother-in-law, was named in Francis Sutcliffe’s probate records.

There are two possible baptisms at the cathedral in Sheffield for each woman.

16th August 1677, Maria fil Johannis Taylor
13th August 1682, Anna fil Johannis Taylor

or

7th November 1681, Anna fil Willm Taylor
22nd March 1687, Maria fil Will Taylor

It doesn’t look like there’s an easy way to exclude one or the other  ???

Did either John Taylor or William Taylor leave a will? If you’re fortunate enough, one of them may have named his children in the will. Daughters were usually referred to as (name) wife of (husband’s name) unless they were unmarried at the time. Did Tobias Ellis leave a will? He may have other Taylors as witnesses.
