Margaret FORBES - Sussex origin or elsewhere in England? 1760s
« on: Wednesday 13 October 21 08:31 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Margaret FORBES married a George COLLINS (b. Alvertoke, Hampshire in 1768) at St. Peter the Great Church, Chichester, Sussex on 20th August, 1788.

I am trying to find out where Margaret was born. I have searched both Hampshire, Sussex and elsewhere without much luck! I found an entry in January, 1769 in Stepney, London. Parentst were Alexander and Christian. I found another in Westminster, London in November, 1771. Parents here were Robert & Margaret. I cannot see any likely entries in either of Sussex or Hampshire so I am a little confused on where to go from here..?

Can you please advise me on how to proceed with finding Margaret Forbe's origins and therefore more about her ancestral lineage?

Thanking you..regards,
Rob

Have you seen this marriage notice that suggests that Margarets mother is Christian Forbes

Thanks Rosie/Col no I missed these details. When I last looked at the marriage entry I did not notice much detail. The original entry makes fascinating reading. Christian was able to write and indeed George was already a widower at 21!! So Margaret appears to be the Stepney baptism daughter of Alexander who is also deceased. Thanks again regards Rob

I cannot find a marriage for Alexander & Christian in England, I did notice they had a daughter Christian baptised Nov 1770, Stepney.

Yes Colin I too could not find any marriage..do you have any suggestions on how to ocate this? I checked Scotland too without a likely entry. Are there any other records that may indicate occupation and/or place of residence either in London or elsewhere in England? Thanks cheers, Rob

When I last looked at the marriage entry I did not notice much detail. The original entry makes fascinating reading.

It's an allegation (the marriage was by licence) and it says George was 21 years and upwards
The bond (previous image) says he was a staymaker of the city of Chichester

This seems to be the only one mother Christian.

Margaret Forbes
Christening18 January 1769
Saint Mary Matfelon, Stepney, Middlesex, England
Father: Alexander Forbes
Mother: Christian

As mentioned no marriages in England, I did find one in Scotland in 1753 but no daughter Margaret. Sadly no Margaret Forbes parents Alexander & Christian born in Scotland.

So either the records did not survive. Maybe Christian & Margaret moved to Sussex, as there is no Alexander mentioned on the document Rosie posted.
