OMA isn't the theatre of war, it looks like office jargon against men KIA.
Probably something to do with the allocation of medals.
The reason he was missing presumed dead is because the attack failed
& the Btn. was driven back pretty much to where they started from.
The men killed were left where they were. Often the Germans would bury them
but the graves weren't marked.

Thanks Jim.  I am just struggling to find out when he transferred from the 1/4 to the 2/4.  His service record says that he was in the 2/4 from the 3rd May 1917, but this was the day he was missing in action presumed killed.  He must have already been in the 2/4 because his service record matches up to the movements of the 2/4, as in he, and they, sailed from Southampton on the 13th January 1917 and arrived in Havre on the 14th.  Any ideas?

The Medal Roll gives all Btn's. a man served with overseas .
Your man only has the 2/4th. so transferred prior to them
going overseas in Jan. 1917.

Thanks, I thought he must have done.  I went back to the beginning of the document and found this (I had started with the journey to France in January 1917)

This looks like the Y & L TF were re-organised prior to sending the 1/4th. & 1/5th. overseas
as 1st. line Btn's.
Prior to this these Btn's. were service Btn's. so not 1st. line.

two questions if you don't mind.

Is it possible to find out which company a Private was in?  Just reading the War Diary and the different Companies within the 2/4th were allocated different tasks.
EDIT. the letter sent to Winfield's mother informing her of his death came from H. G. Seagrave, who said that he was in his Platoon.  The War Diary lists Lieut. Seagrave as being in "B" company on the 2nd May so I guess that answers that question.

Also, what is a "Bombing block" - plenty of references on Google but no definition.  (as in to establish a bombing block).

You do sometimes see a man's Coy. listed against him on various documents
but in this case B Coy. would be the one as it was his responsibility to write to the
NOK.
I've had a look at the diary but can't see a reference to a bombing block. Can you remember
the page no ?
Meanwhile a bombing block in most cases means bombers (Mills bombs) would be brought
up to the trench position & throw grenades into trench positions not held by them in
order to protect the men from an enemy attack.
If men got into the enemy trench but the Coys. on their flanks hadn't it left them open
to counter-attack on both flanks leaving them cut off.
