The 1851 census has the spelling as Elbroad Street.

I think it might be tiler etc.

Oh you are wonderfully clever Chatters 

You're right - this was the bp for Sophia and now I've finally found her father was anything from a Plasterer, sometimes Painter to even a Tiler on an odd occasion. Generally all the same building trade I guess.

I can now see that "ge" is most likely their version of "etc". It all makes sense - THANK YOU

I think it is a very odd “ of” but so close to tiler seemed part of that
word.
