There was a John Hunter who was a widowed school teacher and died in Donegal 1897 age 80...

But it looks like John Hunter was a farmer as mentioned.

Hi Siouxann.
Samuel Hunter was my 2 x Great Grandfather.  I have him passing away on 19 Sept 1897 in an Asylum in Auckland.  His wife Caroline remarried in 1898 to a John Perry Harrison.  My Great Grandmother was Samuel and Caroline's daughter Margaret.

Samuel Hunter and Caroline North were my great-grandparents on my mother's side. Their son, William Hunter was my mother's father.
We didn't know much about Samuel as he seemed to have been dropped from family history (William died when mum was 6, and Caroline died in the Spanish flu epidemic), mum seems to think because of the Asylum. Mum had a copy of his death certificate and coroner's report which a Tauranga pathologist looked at - thought poor Samuel had had a brain tumor.
Mum is 91 now and her memory isn't so flash, somewhere in her boxes is quite a bit on family history.
