help wanted baptism/birth search Crosier Warrington
« on: Friday 15 October 21 10:18 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am struggling to find the birth/baptism of my Great Grandfather x 4 (Thomas Crosier), he died in 1829 in Warrington Lancs aged 49 and was married in Warrington in 1801 (making him 21) so roughly born in 1780, on his marriage cert his occupation is glass cutter/engraver. I have been looking on ancestry and Lancashire Parish records online but only comes up with his death and marriage certs. Is it possible and reasonable to think he could of been born somewhere else? he would of done an apprenticeship surely to work in the glass trades and they were usually 7 years?
Also I have found a document of him making a payment subscription to the freemasons and I am currently waiting for information from them.

Sorry for the long winded message, any help would be much appreciated  ;D

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

I see that his occupation is mentioned on the Marriage Licence Bonds and Allegations.  I never seen an occupation mentioned on a marriage certificate before 1837.

Have you considered that his surname may have been Crozier?  I'll have a look and see what I can find for any possible baptism.

There is a baptism for a Thomas Crosier on 24 December 1780 at Ryton in the county of Durham.  Father is also Thomas.  Father was residing at Winlaton Mill at the time of baptism.

This is from a transcript, no image provided.

There is also a Thomas Catherick Crosier baptised 26 December 1780 at Haughton Le Skerne.  Father is George.

I'll check the Crozier spelling to see what appears.

There is only one Thomas Crozier baptism, 1783 in Essex so I don't think that is likely to be him.

I have checked the name Crozier (that's the way we spell it, but going back on ancestry it changes to crosier), I have looked into Thomas Catherick (unusual name) Crosier and it looks like he dies in Durham and is buried in Durham.

Also Durham is quite a distance from Warrington, struggling to understand what would drive somebody to go that far in the 1700s?

Ancestry has a Thomas Crosier baptised 20 Oct  1776 in Broughton, Lancashire.  Father Joshua

LancsOPC have transcribed it as James,  It could be either original is feint though I do think it is probably Thomas (There are baptisms with first name James either side of it.)

List of churches in Warrington on Lancashire Online Parish Clerks website. Foundation year of a church if known. Select a church name to see what register transcriptions are on the website. e.g. Holy Trinity C. of E. transcriptions start 1816; church existed in previous century. St. Helen was a chapel of ease, existing in 15th century, some baptisms are in St. Elphin registers, see note at start of the page for St. Helen. Methodist and Congregational chapels were in Warrington from late 18thC.

The only Crosier pre 1800 register entry in Warrington I found by using LAN-OPC Ancestor Search was Charles, baptised at St. Elphin 1795, son of John Sevile CROSIER & Alice. Transcription has ? after Sevile, indicating name is unclear. Have you investigated this family in case there's a connection?

County map with parishes outlined. Enlarge it for a better view and to see which parishes are near Warrington. You could then look up their parish pages to see which churches existed and then check which registers are online.

A printed list of church registers held by Lancashire Archives is on their online catalogue LANCAT.

Have you looked for a baptism in Cheshire registers?

What are the names of Thomas’ children?
