Cause of death - Parkes?

Can anyone tell me what the first word on this cause of death is? It looks like Parkes to me but I can't find any medical conditions of that name.

This is on a death certificate for a 20-year old woman, in 1864.

The first part looks like Parthis but don’t think it is that.
The  second is Convulsions 19 hours .Certified .
I wonder if it is a mis spelling of Pthysis  ,the proper name for Tuberculosis?
The term Haemoptysis is used for the coughing and spitting of blood .

P.S. A thought, probably to do with childbirth two days before, not two days duration of any symptoms necessarily.But of course in this instance it could not have been longer ie before the birth.
 The young woman could convulse through loss of blood perhaps or a raging infection like Puerperal Fever ,but two days still seems soon  for that.

I'm not sure about it being a misspelling of Pthysis; it would have been a common enough condition that it seems a bit unlikely it would be misspelled. That said, a quick search does show convulsions/fits/seizures can be a symptom of TB.

She was married about 8 months before she died, so it's possible she was pregnant. There's no record of any child born to the couple though.

it sounds very much like what would be diagnosed today as eclampsia.

You could well be right, Gadget.

Showing my ignorance here but I wasn't aware of how common an issue seizures/convulsions were/are in pregnancy and childbirth. Doing some reading I came across an article about maternal mortality that rather grimly described convulsions as being one of the Four Horsemen of Death in maternal mortality.

Yes Gadget, the word eclampsia did not come to mind but the word which we now know to be Partus is the clue. As I said I thought it might have been to do with childbirth but the word eclampsia escaped me.
We talk about post partum haemorrhages etc.
Don’t you feel sorry for women in those early times, it is bad enough now!
