This George is very interesting but not the one I was hoping to find. This George was born in England. Thanks for the info.

The George Waterson - stonecutter in the City Directories could be the one who died in 1880. Dates might fit him. As I said before the 1870 census if mostly illegible in parts. The 1880 newspaper article shows there were many stonecutters around but perhaps the George listed in 1862 died before the 1870 census ? Lots of ifs and buts.
Nothing turning up under Geo/G/George Waterson/Watterson or with parents James and Mary.
Doesn't seem to turn up with a birth year of 1834 or other various years.

Are all of these Georges in the city directory the same person, or  different persons? The George that I was following was found in the 1860 census with his father James, and he is 26 and is listed as Stone Mason, not stone cutter, if that makes a difference. They live in Colerain Township, Lancaster Co., and the post office is Colerain. James is believed to have lived in Lower Oxford most of the time, in Mt. Vernon. I don't know what became of George after the 1860 census.

Reply 16 referred to George Waterson in Philadelphia.

Mason is one whose occupation is to build with stone or brick; also, one who prepares stone for building purposes while stonecutter is somebody who cuts, carves or dresses stone.

Reply 33 was meant to show how may George Waterson were listed in Philadelphia City Directories
1870/1880

You didn't say yours was living in Colerain Township, Lancaster in 1860.
Perhaps this should have been a different thread so we don't get the families mixed up.

So that everyone can see which family you are referring to, this is the 1860 Colerain Township Lancaster Pennsylvania.  No Mary, presume deceased.

James Watterson 57 Farm Hand.
Joseph Watterson 27
George Watterson 26 Stone Mason.
Rachel Watterson 20

living next to

James Watterson 23 Farm Hand
Rachel Watterson 27
John Watterson 8 months.

Thank you Sandra. The James Watterson living next-door on the 1860 census is 12 year old James on the 1850 census, now married to another Watterson, Rachel. Thanks for finding the family  in 1850. Mary is likely deceased before 1860.
I havenít found George in 1870 so donít know if he died or what. It is my belief that the father James died in a fight at the Oxford hotel on August 10, 1870 but he shouldíve been on the census before that as it was done July 11 in that area.

I had noticed your friend had clipped the article on father James a few weeks ago
Here it is for those who wish to read the story.

I have to wonder who the 42 yr old Elizabeth is on the 1850 census, with James and Mary in New London Township. Sister?
