Marriage by Certificate 1933
« on: Sunday 17 October 21 17:14 BST (UK) »
My parents were married in 1933 by "Certificate".  My father had moved to Cheshire with his parents, my mother was living in Halifax with her mother.  The marriage took place in Halifax - King Cross Methodist Chapel - and is said to be by Certificate.

I'm assuming that "Certificate" is similar to "Licence"  :-\  Would there have been additional paperwork, similar to Bond/Allegation, or not?

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Many thanks, I think I now understand.  I'm assuming that a copy of the Certificate would not be available.

Ah - just spotted also that one set of grandparents were married by Certificate - 1907 - St John's Wesleyan Chapel, Halifax.  The other set were married by Banns at St Augustine, Halifax (C of E)  :)

Interesting!  :-\  We learn something new every day!

Simple answer No.

It is simply the term used in Nonconformist Churches who don’t have the calling of Banns. I was married by Certificate in a Congregational Church.

Many thanks!

AND I've just looked at my own marriage certificate - by Certificate - East Ham Register Office in 1964!

We were married in 1982 by Common Licence;I haad a connection to the Church but my husband had no connection to the church where he was living at the time and his own church was many miles away, so our Vicar suggested the Common Licence which meant we did not have to have Banns read at both churches.  We were given the Licence at the end of the ceremony at the same time as we received our Marriage certificate
