immigration records

Greetings fellow researchers!  I'm seeking some help on how I go about finding the records for my next piece of information. I recently discovered that a great, great uncle immigrated with his family from England to New Zealand sometime between 1856 and 1861.  His last child was born in England in 1856.  He was on the 1851 census but there was no trace of him on the 1861 census.  I have found the records of his family in New Zealand after that.  Now my question is how do I find immigration records for that period of time??  They lived in Northumberland and was there a port or ?? they usually left the country through?  I don't have a specific date or ship.  I did look on the New Zealand site and it seems that ships were coming from Australia.  I wonder if they stopped first in Australia??? I just don't know where to begin.....
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So, you are looking for emigration records from UK, and immigration records at the NZ end?

There are no passenger lists available before 1890 at the UK end.
You have to concentrate your search in NZ records.
Emigration was likely to be from Liverpool or London, but Glasgow may be a possibility.

Also, check their obituaries, sometimes they mention the ship they arrived on.

Yes, I will try the obituaries.  I have been unable to progress through ship lists.  I don't think there are lists for that time.  I might also try voting lists, etc. in New Zealand to find them.  Thank you for responding to me. The newspapers are a good idea.  I got a free week about a month ago and found some relatives records from Canada.  I wasn't looking for this family at the time.

Good afternoon,
The names are John Young (born 1812 in Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland) and his wife, Jane Todd (born 1814 in Berwick as well)  The children are James 1835, John Brice 1843, Ralph Todd 1846, Catharine 1850, Walter 1852, Thomas 1853, and Richard 1856. All the children were born in Berwick Upon Tweed, so they emigrated after 1856 but before 1861.
Any help would be appreciated.

Oops!  Location in New Zealand.  At first it was Pukekohe East, Auckland, New Zealand.

The records have these locations:
Gisborne, East Coast, N.Z.
Auckland, N.Z.
Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, N.Z.

I might also try voting lists, etc. in New Zealand to find them.

I've helped a friend research some of her family who emigrated to NZ circa 1854. They went via London. Fortunately, they became prominent business men in one of the major cities, so their obits helped a great deal.

Not surprisingly we couldn't find any passenger lists (from London) for them. But one of the obits mentioned the ship the family sailed on to New Zealand. Then we confirmed the voyage from London in newspaper reports.

One family member sailed to Oz then to NZ in 1853, before the rest of his family. We found him in this set:
