Theodore Nonas 1890
« on: Monday 18 October 21 13:24 BST (UK) »
I have Theodore Nonas (Norens) marrying Eliza Jane Brown(e) in 1916:

Detail Source
Name:   Theodore Norens
Gender:   Male
Age:   26
Birth Date:   1890
Marriage Date:   13 Nov 1916
Marriage Place:   St. Peter, Low Town, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England
Father: Demetrius Noren
Spouse:    Jane Browne
FHL Film Number:   2193453  Reference ID:   386

Freebmd
Surname     First name(s)    Spouse    District    Vol    Page
Marriages Dec 1916   (>99%)
Norens    Theodore     Browne    Tynemouth    10b   458

I have a later death in 1931 in Tynemouth and 2 UK Directory entries in 1921 but nothing else.

The surname is Nonas but there are numerous variations.

I have found an entry on Family Search for a Military Service entry for a Thoedoros Nonas born 1891 Greece, on United Kingdom, Merchant Navy Seamen Records, 1835-1941.

Can't find any mention on Anc...ty. Our library closed so unable to search FimdmyPast.  Would welcome any help looking for this info and any other information about Theodore.

Jane is on the 1939 Register as a widow which fits with the 1931 death.

Theo and Jane had had several children, not all of whom survived infancy, but the most interesting one is the daughter whose birth is registered 1933, 2 years after Theo dies. She also dies young.

Jane dies 1984 aged 87. Death registered in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Thanks emeltom, I do have most of the information on Jane and her children etc. (Have her direct line going back to 1722).

Its the Nonas line thats difficult.  I think he may have been a seaman before marrying Jane and was unlikely resident in the UK before the 1911 census.

The Merchant Seaman record on Family Search is on FindMyPast, the card is stamped 4 Jul 1925, North Shields  and says it was from the Renewal book as the original had been lost

Nonas, Theodoros
Born 1891 , Syr(a/o) , Greece

Discharge No 1129448, Rating: F'Man (? Fireman) and another word I am struggling to decipher (see snippet)
He was 5ft 6ins tall, brown eyes, dark hair, dark complexion,  had a tattoo of a snake and woman on his right forearm.
He marked X as his signature.

Thanks so much Boo, that does look like my man.  When you have nothing this makes a great find. Am doing this for a friend and this is her great grandfather, I think she will be pleased.

Thanks again

Do you have the newspaper report from 1932 about his widow? I am happy to transcribe the details should you want it.

I am doing nightshifts just now, but if you like I will see if I can find a bit more out for you at the North Shields local studies.

See parish records on link.
It looks like they will have the marriage record so I should be likely to get full marriage info.
I also may be able to get a burial record for you.  It may take up to about two weeks but I think I will be able to fit in a visit soon.
