Help/ideas finding ancestor Ellen Kilshaw
« on: Monday 18 October 21 14:13 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am looking for help/ideas on how to find my 2 x Great Grandmother and her family before her marriage in 1878 or ideas why I canít find any trace of her.

Her name was Ellen Kilshaw born 1849 in Burtonwood, Lancashire, England. Her father was called John Kilshaw occupation Railway Pointer and had died by 1878 when Ellen married Stanley Chandler. Her address was Church Street, Warrington on her marriage certificate. Witnesses at her wedding were Richard and Jane Barlow who I discovered  lived at 31 Dakinís Yard, Church Street, Warrington.

I cannot find any trace of Ellen or her family before she got married, afterwards I can trace her until her death in 1912 although I canít find where she is buried.

I ordered a birth certificate for an Ellen Kilshaw in Prescot mothers name TILLY but this is not correct. As well as this Ellenís father being William I have followed her until she married and am satisfied that this is not my 2 x Great Grandmother.

I think that this is all the information that I have. I would appreciate any help or advice.

Many thanks

Hi Redmoore

One reason could be the spelling of her name, Ellen could be down as Helen or Eleanor for example or it could have been a middle name she used.

With Kilshaw that could also appear with different spellings but will have a look.

One thing to confirm from the marriage - as she was nearly 30 was she down as a spinster not a widow?

You can check her birth surname from the registration of any children she had - the birth registration should show her maiden name.  Just to confirm she was a Kilshaw.

Also something to bear in mind people did make up father's names if they were illegitimate.

Have you discounted Ellen Kilshaw 1848 birth registration St. Helens?

Ancestor Search on Lancashire Online Parish Clerks for Kilshaw baptisms with father John has several results but no Ellen.
KILSHALL baptisms at St. Michael, Burtonwood, parents John & Eliza, abode Newton, and John & Ann, abode Burtonwood.
KILSHALL baptism Chapel of St. Mary, Great Sankey, parents John & Ann, abode Burtonwood.
KILSHAW at St. Nicholas, Sutton, parents John & Esther, abode Burtonwood.

Have you tried variants Kelshaw and Kelsall?
Milliepede has suggested variations on her forename Ellen. She might have been known as Nelly/Nellie.
Some people gave a made-up father's name when they married if they were born to a single mother, or named their stepfather or a combination of their own surname + stepfather/grandfather/ or father's forename if known. A few of mine did that.
Was Ellen C. of E.? Was she consistent about her birthplace and her age?

I can see there was a daughter Minnie born 1887 and she has mothers maiden name Kilshaw so that seems to confirm that.

Ellen not consistent with age - how old was she on the marriage certificate?

1881 age 30 born Burtonwood
1891 age 47 born Burtonwood
1901 age 49 born Burtonwood
1911 age 63 born Burtonwood

at least birth place is consistent

1891 age has a mark through it but the others are clearly written.
