Enumerator's poor spelling
« on: Tuesday 19 October 21 16:58 BST (UK) »
I've just come across a chap in Kendal in 1851 who is described as an "Engine Stalker".

As he came from Scotland my mind conjured up a vision of a chap in a kilt who ha been thrown off the land and changed from sneaking up on deer to working with things which were more predictable.

And then I noticed that one of his children was described as a "Schollar", and he was likely to be feeding coal into a boiler.   ;D

My apologies, in advance for this  :'(

You are talking about 1851 so 160 years ago, a Scottish accent interpreted by a Lancashire accent and we have no idea of the enumerator's education.

The enumerator consistently spells Scholar with two Ls. I also came across a "Dealer in Hatts", "Barr Maid" "Buss Driver" and "Linnen Dealer".

This chap really liked double letters! Then I came across "Coffe Shop Keeper".

The Enumerator received schedules completed by the head of household which the Enumerator copied into the Enumerator's book.
Who knows how the enumerator behaved when collecting the schedules  - given the literacy that applied at the time. Collect and walk away? Collect and discuss? Who knows?
The entry in the enumerator's book may be a straight transcription of the schedule. Or, was the head of household unable to complete the schedule and completed with the help of the enumerator?
The original schedules were destroyed, leaving only the Enumerator's book - hence, who knows?,

Touche (ooooh! how do I add the accent?)  :-[  And I might add, some of the contributions on this site.

(I will admit that I failed O level English twice - BUT I do know of some friends who saw me with a red pen in my hand when it came to spelling  ;D)
