Robert Gwillim/Gilham 1846-1921 Islington
« on: Thursday 21 October 21 20:43 BST (UK) »
I am trying to discover who Robert's parents were.
He married Louisa Buckland (c1869-1895) in 1868 in Islington.
They had 10 children between 1869 and 1888 - Mary Ann (Maria), Sarah Louisa, Matilda Caroline, Joseph Thomas, Robert Edward, John William, William, Esther, Jane Elizabeth, Louisa.
It is the eldest son Joseph Thomas's branch that I am researching.

Their surname is GWILLIM in the 1871 census, and GILHAM in 1881 and 1891 - and their children's surnames are also either Gwillim or Gilham in other records.
Wife Louisa's birthplace varies in the census - 1871 Jersey, 1881 Westminster, 1891 Islington. And, in 1881, Louisa and their eldest dau Mary Ann seem to have been conflated.
In 1881, there is also a mother in the household - Louisa Gilham, 61, widow, b.Westminster - although my guess is that she was actually the mother-in-law (i.e. Louisa Buckland). But, whatever her surname, I cannot find any other record for her.

I had previously thought that Robert was Robert Matthew Gilham, son of Charles Gilham and Elizabeth Edwards.
Robert Matthew was also born in 1846 (bapt 1858) - but he married (1) Hanna Maria Makin in 1870, and (2) Mary Brandon in 1885. He had nine children with his first wife - none of them named Joseph Thomas.

Any help is breaking through the Robert Gwillim/Gilham brickwall would be much appreciated.

That seems to confirm his parents names but his marriage certificate to Louisa should have fathers name Joseph.

Oh, that sounds very promising indeed - thanks, jonw65 and johnhood !!
I'll go and have a look at the link in my local library, as I don't subscribe to Ancestry.
I don't have the marriage cert, Milliepede - just looked it up on FreeBMD.

Convert the link to www.ancestrylibraryedition.co.uk + the rest!

Also an exam re a Joseph Gwilliam (their spelling) in the same book, 26 June 1866 (image 54)
Says he is 54 (is that right?), of 5 Elliotts Place
Is ill

Info from sister in law Ellen Gwilliam, 20, of 33 Elliotts Place
Which is one of the addresses listed for Robert in his exam!

William Way said that Robert's father Joseph died 5 or 6 years ago, was a dustman
Esther died 2 years ago.

This death fits the timeframe suggested by William Way

GILHAM, JOSEPH

What a lot of lovely information !! and my thanks to Mabel now too.
I'll probably be up all night with all this new info to follow up on  ;D
I tried the converted link, jonw65, but need the library's user name/password - a pity, because it's so much easier accessing Ancestry at home.

Kinsy, would you like any info re Roberts parents, ie baptism records, marriage and death. Aslo his siblings, have found 6 plus a couple of their marriages. Also Roberts great grandparents. Do not want to spoil your searching.
